Jean-Pierre Jeunet's latest
A little less than a year ago, news arrived that Amelie / Micmacs filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet was ready to jump into his next job, and, even more excitingly, back to English for his first film since that one we don’t really talk about. You know, the one set in the Alien universe… But all eyes are now on The Young And Prodigious Spivet, which has just added Helena Bonham Carter and Kathy Bates to its cast.
Jeunet adapted the script from Rief Larson’s novel The Selected Works Of TS Spivet, working with regular collaborator Guillaume Laurent.
Spivet revolves around the titular youngster (Kyle Catlett) a boy boasting extraordinary navigation and other skills who leaves his father (Callum Keith Rennie) and the rest of his family behind in Montana to head out on a cross-country quest to the Smithsonian in Washington to receive a prize.
While Jeunet has said that this will be more realistic than his other movies, it’ll still be full of his trademark visual delights and, for the first time, sees him taking a stab at 3D. But don’t worry about him sacrificing his style for shonky, post-converted dimensionality – he’s hiring Hugo stereographer Demetri Portelli to help with that aspect. And he’ll reunite with several of his usual behind-the-scenes team. They’re all set to start filming next month in Canada.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has demon trouble
One of these days, people will learn that buying dodgy boxes from estate sales and car boot events never leads to good things. In some cases, it leaves you with a collection of moldy fuzzy felt. In others, such as the real-life case that The Possession is purportedly based on, you get the screaming and the stabbing and the blood everywhere. Take a look at the trailer below.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick star as Clyde and Stephenie Brenek, who are in the middle of a divorce. When Clyde takes Em (Natasha Calis) and Hannah (Madison Davenport) out rummaging through garage sales so he can find cheap things for his new apartment, Em comes across a weird old box that appears to have no seams. Instead of warning her away from the freaky item (because they always lead to trouble), the doting dad lets her buy it. Mistaaaaaaake!
Soon, poor Em is seemingly possessed by what her parents discover is a Dybbuk, a malicious ancient spirit that enjoys taking people over and causing havoc. When medical science can’t seem to help, they turn to religion. But could it be too late? And why doesn’t Morgan simply call the Winchester boys in to help? Oh, right… This isn’t Supernatural. But it would be awesome if they’d been around to help.
With Sam Raimi pulling the producer puppet strings on this one and Just Another Love Story / Deliver Us From Evil director Ole Bornedal calling the shots, The Possession will be out of the box on August 31.

Writing and starring in a new thriller
When he’s putting together films to shoot in his native Australia, Joel Edgerton always seems drawn to darker topics such as crime and death. He’s set to keep that track record going, having scribbled the script for Felony.
Edgerton is also planning to star in the film, which tracks the fallout after a decorated police officer accidentally runs a young cyclist off the road. Turns out the cop had been drinking while celebrating a successful drug bust with his colleagues. But when he decides to lie about the incident, he changes more than his own life.
Matthew Saville is calling the shots on this one, with producers touting the film at the Cannes Film Market, looking to interest foreign buyers. The current plan is to get the cameras cranking this October.
Last seen fighting an alien creature in The Thing, Edgerton is currently at work on Kathryn Bigelow’s Bin Laden pic Zero Dark Thirty. He’ll next take a break from villains and evil for The Odd Life Of Timothy Green and will then be seen in Baz Lurhmann’s new, 3D take on The Great Gatsby.

A remake of a Japanese gangster pic
Since he decided to take a break from Hollywood blockbusters and return to making Chinese epics, John Woo has largely been caught up crafting his huge Red Cliff films. But though he has a variety of other projects jostling for attention, he’s zeroing in on a remake of Japanese Yakuza pic Day Of The Beast.
In what sounds like the sort of movie that could benefit from Woo’s typical visual flair, Beast sees a Westerner in Tokyo getting caught up in a clash between Cold War Russian gangsters and the Japanese mob.
Seijun Suzuki directed the original film in 1963, and the new version will feature a script by Rob Frisbee.
While it might not seem as though a remake is the best use of Woo’s filmmaking gifts, he’s seeing it as more than just a chance to produce a new take on something seen before. He wants it to stand as a tribute to the studio that made the original: "This remake is my salute to the great films and filmmakers produced by Nikkatsu's 100 years in cinema history," Woo said in a statement picked up by The Wrap. He's currently gearing up to make Love And Let Love, which stars Ziyi Zhang.

With Richard E Grant in a revenge comedy
Jude Law will be brushing up on his safecracking skills soon. No, we’re not trying to insinuate that he’s turning to a life of crime – he’s going to be playing a personable thief in Dom Hemingway, the latest film from The Matador’s Richard Shepard.
Announced as part of the latest wave of movies looking to drum up either financing or buzz at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Dom Hemingway will follow the titular character, a man describe as “a larger than life safecracker with a loose fuse who is also funny, profane and dangerous.”
The plot finds him freshly released from prison, and looking to collect on what he’s owed thanks to him keeping schtum about what he knew on his last job. Richard E Grant is also among the cast, though we don’t yet know what his role will be.
Producer Jeremy Thomas is working with Hanway Films and BBC Films to get the movie made, and Shepard is pencilling in an autumn shoot in the capital.
Law, who last brought Dr Watson back to our screens for Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, already has Joe Wright's Anna Karenina and voice work on DreamWorks’ Rise Of The Guardians under his belt, and is currently filming Steven Soderbergh’s The Bitter Pill.

Update: She and Liam Neeson are locked
Update: It's taken a few weeks of haggling but now Deadline reports that Neeson and Wilde are both set to star for Haggis.
Two Liam Neeson casting stories in one week? Why monsieur, you are spoiling us! Yes, the Ballymena Bruiser is indeed one of the actors who Paul Haggis has recruited for his latest planned film, Third Person. From the sounds of it, Neeson will be in a relationship with Olivia Wilde. Tough job…
Haggis talked to Vulture about the new project, which, in its script stage at least, isn’t actually new at all. He’s apparently been writing it for years and, after the New York Post began talking up the focus as on a New York party reporter, Haggis has been quick to fact-check. "It's about three story lines, three love stories, three relationships in three different cities that combine in a very odd way: New York, Paris, Rome. And so I wanted one of them to have a job in New York. So after writing the script, I thought, Oh, party reporting, that would be great. But literally, it's just that. The character is not based on anyone, or anything like that.”
Haggis was largely cagey on casting details, but did let slip that Neeson is on board and that he’ll be romancing Wilde’s character, who is indeed a party reporter in the Big Apple.
There’s nothing quite set in stone just yet, though Haggis is looking to start shooting the movie in August. If it does come to pass, it'll mark a reunion between Haggis and Wilde, since she co-starred in his short-lived US telly drama The Black Donnellys back in 2007...

REVIEW: WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOUNews
Creepy? You betcha
Following on from April's really rather disturbing David video virals comes team Prometheus' latest online offering in the form of this Noomi Rapace-starring clip we've got for you below.
Showing Dr. Elizabeth Shaw begging Weyland Corp. to take her on her voyage of discovery via a video message, it's not quite as chilling as David's birthday celebrations, but still disturbing in its own flickery way.
Aside from the garbled sound and the general forboding tone, what's really piqued our interest in this clip is the inclusion of the name 'Yutani' in the software used to analyse Shaw's face - as in, the Weyland Yutani.
And yet, at this point in the Alien story, it's just Weyland Corp., so how do Yunati get involved? Only time, and watching Prometheus itself when it comes out in the UK on June 1, will tell.
P.S. Did you notice the nice sight gag when the screen says 'Lisbet' in reference to her starring role in the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy? That's right, they're doing meta-jokes now, the clever bastards.

Terence Davies finds a distributor too
It was a long time between drinks for Terence Davies - excluding, of course, his terrific documentary work - but he seems to have rediscovered the bug for feature filmmaking. His next film, Sunset Song, is coming to fruition and has kicked off Cannes by adding Peter Mullan and Agyness Deyn to its cast roster and scoring an international distribution deal with Fortissimo Films.
Like his last film, The Deep Blue Sea, Sunset Song is a period piece with literary roots. In this case, the adaptation stems from a novel rather than a stage play: Scottish writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon's 1932 tale of family dysfunction and rural life in north east Scotland.
It's been another Davies project with a tough infancy. The UK Film Council quailed at its tough subject matter and, according to the director, withdrew funding in 2006; understandable perhaps, considering the story kicks off with suicide and a double infanticide. Deyn will play Chris Guthrie, a grieving daughter forced to work the land and deal with the unwanted attentions of her bruising father (Mullan). The Adventures Of Milo And Otis, this ain't.
Sunset Song reunites Davies with The House Of Mirth producer Bob Last and will shoot in Scotland. As always with the great Liverpudlian, this will be one to watch.

'You know, I'm very torn...'

The Los Angeles Times got some time with Avengers director Joss Whedon just before the film's premiere two weeks ago, but only now has an intriguing titbit come to light online about the possibility of Avengers 2.
“You know, I’m very torn. It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it."
So for all you Whedon-lovers, that's the bad side of the coin - making these recording-breaking superhero movies takes it out of a man, it seems.
"But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”
...and there's the good side of the coin. What those ideas are, of course, remain to be seen, but for everyone out there who's keen for Whedon to do the now confirmed Avengers sequel, it's not a done deal yet, though there's a small chance it might.
One thing we do know is that if the Avengers sequel is helmed by Whedon, he'd like more women to be involved. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly (with Scarlett Johansson), he's on the record as saying:
"Studios will tell you: A woman cannot headline an action movie. After The Hunger Games they might stop telling you that a little bit. Whatever you think of the movie, it’s done a great service. And after The Avengers, I think it’s changing."
More women in back action movies? Sounds like a very good thing indeed – as does another Whedon Avengers 2, to be honest.
For more details on The Avengers and Marvel's ongoing plans for the characters that appear in it, be sure to listen to our Avengers spoiler podcast with Marvel studio head Kevin Feige below.

The legend continues!
In the US, some lucky audiences will get the chance to see special Anchorman 2 teaser footage before their screenings of The Dictator – footage already in the can to wet our whistles like three fingers of Glenlivet – while the rest of us will have to wait until it comes online. Still, we can console ourselves with this new poster of the Channel 4 news team.
Sure, it's just Brick, Brian, Champion and Ronald, lined up in a row, shoes staring into the distance, but there's something about it. Something... newsworthy. You know, aside from the fact that a couple of the guys appear on only have one leg.
Ah, that's it – it's the name. It seems that McKay and Ferrell are forgoing the Anchorman 2 tag that the sequel's been dubbed so far, instead calling it Anchorman: The Legend Continues. Something that makes sense, as the original film's full name was, of course, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

And just in case you missed it – not likely, admittedly – here's Mr. Burgundy's announcement on Conan from a few months ago.For more on Anchorman: The Legend Continues, check out our exclusive interview with director Adam McKay in the current issue.

For Scott Rudin and Sony
You are Sony Pictures. You’re planning a film about a legend in the technology industry, a man who was a benevolent god to some and a bête noire to others. You already have Scott Rudin aboard to produce. So what’s the missing piece of the puzzle? Why, Social Network scriptwriter Aaron Sorkin, of course!
Since he was first approached in November, Sorkin has spent the time umming, ahhing and being slightly busy crafting new HBO drama The Newsroom. But now he's finally given in to the studio’s romantic overtures and will adapt Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs for the big screen. Sony apparently splashed out $1 million for the rights to the bestseller about Jobs, which is based on interviews with the man himself and others and covers most of his life. There’s no word on what particular chunk Sorkin will focus on, but more importantly, we wonder what this will mean for Joshua Michael Stern’s Jobs. Stern already has Ashton Kutcher attached to star as the young Steve and a good head start on Sony’s project. But you’ve got to think he’ll be looking over his shoulder at the behemoth headed his way.
“Steve Jobs’ story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time,” Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal said in a statement picked up by The Hollywood Reporter. “There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining and polarizing." Now we wonder who will be hired to direct the thing…. And whom do you think will Sony hire as Jobs? Guesses below and on the tweet-stream, folks!
