Charging concept plugs your phone directly into the wall
Provided by: popgadget.net12012-02-07 21:27:00technology / popgadget.net /

htc-charging.jpg

This is a really clever concept from Francois Rybarczyk, which changes the way we charge our mobile phones by taking any unnecessary cables out of the equation.

The phone would come with a special module, which can be left attached to the handset and plugged into the wall directly, or just plugged in on its own then transferred back to the phone later on so you can still use it while it's charging. Genius!

iOS companion game Infiltrator to offer bonuses in Mass Effect 3
Provided by: arstechnica.com42012-02-07 21:15:00technology / arstechnica.com /

Next month's launch of Mass Effect 3 is extending past the usual PS3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms with Mass Effect Infiltrator, an iOS game that will tie in with the console and PC title to provide bonuses and unlock content.

A number of reports from an EA promotional event in New York describe Infiltrator as a third-person shooter in which players work to free prisoners from a Cerberus base. Completed rescues in the iOS title will unlock "exclusive weaponry" and increase players' "Galactic Readiness" rating in Mass Effect 3 according to the reports, helping players to unlock the best ending in the main game. Actions in infiltrator will also affect the larger story in Mass Effect 3.

This isn't the first time the Mass Effect series has appeared on iOS. 2009's Mass Effect Galaxy was a short, top-down shooter that offered an extremely limited tie-in reward with Mass Effect 2 when the game was completed.

EA says Infiltrator will be hitting the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch "soon," presumably ahead of Mass Effect 3's planned March 6 launch.

Apple trademark may hint at processing improvement for next-gen A6 processor
Provided by: arstechnica.com52012-02-07 21:25:00technology / arstechnica.com /

A recent trademark application from Apple for the term "Macroscalar" may give a clue about upcoming improvements for its next-generation mobile processors. The term refers to technology Apple has been working on as far back as 2004, according to Patently Apple, and appears to refer to code optimization techniques that keep processors filled with instructions to run during otherwise repetitive loops.

Apple applied for the trademark for "Macroscalar" in both the US and Hong Kong last week. The trademark application links the term to use with microprocessors as well as mobile devices and software. It turns out that Apple has at least four patents related to what it calls "macroscalar processor architecture," suggesting the trademark is likely connected to an improved processor for its iOS devices.

Fracture Putty Can Heal a Broken Bone In Days
Provided by: slashdot.org62012-02-07 21:40:16technology / slashdot.org /

An anonymous reader writes "If we break a bone it can take weeks or even month to heal depending on the type and severity of the break. In some extreme cases the complexity of the fracture can make it impossible to heal properly. Researchers at the University of Georgia Regenerative Bioscience Center have come up with a new solution for healing broken bones that cuts recovery time to days. It relies on the use of stem cells that contain a bone generating protein. These cells are injected in gel form directly into the area of the broken bone, where they quickly get to work forming new bone. The end result is very rapid recovery, possibly sidestepping the muscle atrophy that can come with long bone healing times. The gel has been proven to work on animals as big as a sheep and has funding from the DoD. Lets hope it is proven to work on humans in the coming years."

Apple says the camera on the iPhone 4S is quick. Well, quicker, anyway. You still have to launch the app, then take a photo. Sometimes it's super fast. Next time, capture that thieving Bigfoot with an app that takes a photo right when it launches. Plus, sync music from DropBox and download YouTube videos on your iPhone, all in today's app deals. Judge denies record label's request to shutter "used" MP3 store
Provided by: arstechnica.com92012-02-07 21:03:00technology / arstechnica.com /

A one-of-a-kind website enabling the online sale of preowned digital-music files got a major legal boost late Monday when a federal judge refused to shutter it at the request of Capitol Records.

ReDigi, which opened in October, says it’s a modern-day, used-record store that provides account holders with a platform to buy and sell used MP3s that were purchased lawfully through iTunes. The platform’s technology does not support other digital files such as those purchased from Amazon or ripped from a CD.

Why Telcos Would Be Testing an Apple iTV Prototype
Provided by: blog.wired.com/gadgets/112012-02-07 20:47:39technology / blog.wired.com/gadgets/ /
According to the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, telecom companies Rogers and Bell Canada have in their labs an early prototype of Apple's rumored television set. Although the possibility of an honest-to-goodness prototype being tested is exciting, the idea that it's being scrutinized by telco operators is actually the more interesting part of the report.
PolitiFact Trashes Lamar Smith: Says His Claims About Economic Impact Of Piracy Are Flat Out False
Provided by: techdirt.com122012-02-07 20:46:28technology / techdirt.com /
We've pointed out before that Lamar Smith based his entire argument for why SOPA was needed on misleading or simply incorrect claims -- but who are we to say that? Thankfully, it appears that the professional fact checkers are in agreement that Smith's argument for SOPA isn't based in reality. The famed PolitiFact fact checking operation has completely dismantled Smith's claim that "illegal counterfeiting and piracy costs the US economy $100 billion every year."

It turns out (as we've pointed out) there's nothing true about that statement. PolitiFact tracks down the key points on which Smith bases this claim, noting that it's a Chamber of Commerce report that says, "the U.S. consumption-based share of counterfeit and pirated goods is between $66 billion and $100 billion." Smith, obviously, just takes that higher number (already a questionable move), and insists that's the "harm." But, as PolitiFact points out, that's not what the report actually says.

In fact, the report flat out states that it "has not attempted to estimate business losses associated with counterfeiting and piracy." So to pretend that's what the report says is, well, lying.

PolitiFact checks in with a number of experts -- including someone from the Chamber of Commerce who produced the report -- who admits that it's simply not true to say that $100 billion is the cost to the economy. Add everything up, and PolitiFact says that Smith is being anything but truthful in his claims:
Smith’s statement draws on a high-end estimate also based on flawed assumptions for the U.S. "consumption-based share of counterfeit and pirated goods" in 2008. The cited $100 billion figure doesn’t reflect the costs to the economy, contrary to Smith’s claim; the 2011 study did not assess such costs, which are understandably slippery.

Maybe there is no solid estimate of the cost to the economy. Smith’s CNN.com statement rates False.
Unfortunately, there still doesn't appear to be any punishment for trying to pass a really bad bill by using misleading stats, other than public ridicule.

An error was ecnountered attempting to get the RSS data: An unknown error occurred. Startup and Technology News 201202061806An interesting thing is happening in hardware marketing these days and I think Devin noticed it yesterday when he pointed out that Samsung, in their marketing of the Samsung Galaxy Note, is changing the script when it comes to gadget advertising, a tendency that is becoming more and more apparent in newer ads from many big players. First, let's look at the history of CE advertising. For most of the 1980s, computer marketing didn't really exist. Take a look at this gem from a 1984 issue of Analog:
Cute Kitsound koala speaker dock for your iPhone
Provided by: popgadget.net142012-02-07 20:59:38technology / popgadget.net /

koala-speaker.jpg

We love this speaker from Kitsound, which lets you play tunes from a round little koala bear's tummy!

It's basically a dock too, so push your iPhone into the top to play and charge, or use the speaker's 3.5mm aux socket to hook it up to other MP3 players. When you switch it on the little creature's nose will light up and you can swipe his touch sensitive ears to adjust the volume too.

The sound quality probably won't be the best out there, but it's cute for kids or as a fun addition to the office.

You can only get your hands on one of the koala speakers from UK stockists at the moment for £53.99, but expect them to be more widely available in the next few months.
